The project
The MICRO-ALPS project aims to raise awareness among local communities and businesses regarding one of the emerging challenges of the 21st century: microplastics. Particular focus is placed on alpine regions, where research on this pollutant is still in its early stages. Microplastics result from the degradation or processing of plastics and, according to UNEP classification, can vary significantly in size. The project uses the eyewear industry as a practical reference point – specifically optical workshops where the cutting and grinding of lenses generates substantial amounts of microplastics.
Within the framework of the project, partners will investigate solutions for the recovery of these particles and test their recyclability for the production of innovative 3D-printed objects. All experimental findings and data collected on the nature and generation of microplastics will be used for knowledge transfer to stakeholders within the program area. The ultimate goal is to prevent the production of microplastics and their release into the environment.
