The project
The FROST.INI project aims at a holistic analysis of permafrost to monitor its degradation and integrate risk mitigation measures into spatial planning policies, thereby improving the resilience of infrastructure in high-altitude regions. Through the development of digital twins, the interaction between infrastructure and permafrost is investigated, evaluating their evolution in relation to climatic influences.
EXTENDED VERSION (Shortened)
Found at altitudes above 2,500 m, permafrost significantly influences slope stability; climate change is exacerbating its degradation and threatening high-altitude infrastructure. By combining in-situ measurements and remote sensing data at Alpine pilot sites, the project strengthens knowledge of permafrost dynamics to integrate risk mitigation measures directly into spatial planning. Key outputs include digital twins for two specific sites, practical management guidelines, and a long-term monitoring system. Furthermore, cross-border, multilingual meetings will promote knowledge exchange and enhance innovation capacity within the Alpine region.
