The project
With the rise in average temperatures – due to climate change – infections transmitted by animal vectors OR “ZOONOSES” are becoming increasingly relevant. Ticks move their activity to higher altitudes and colonize new areas with favorable climatic conditions. Furthermore, non-native species of ticks and mosquitoes are spreading, thus increasing the risk of infections for humans. For effective awareness, concrete information on the types of risk and protection measures is needed. A monitoring system represents a fundamental first step and can be developed and examined in an exemplary way on ticks. New research shows that ticks can transmit numerous diseases, including the recently discovered Alpha-Gal allergy. The project addresses these issues, collects and analyzes data on the distribution of ticks, and creates the basis for targeted prevention. Main activity: Capillary monitoring of ticks in East Tyrol, the South Tyrolean Puster Valley, and the province of Belluno, using hunters as a base for information, awareness, and research.
