The project
The goal of the project was the collection and development of knowledge to be able to apply the “Sponge City” tree planting system autonomously in the future. This was achieved on one hand through joint theoretical training between Lienz and Bruneck, and on the other through practical applications in Lienz and Bruneck. Pieve di Cadore benefited from the know-how of the two cities and developed a study to apply the Sponge City principle to a large, fully asphalted parking lot. The method has proven particularly effective in urban settings, as it improves the growth and longevity of city trees in the context of climate change. Trees with optimal access to air, water, and nutrients offer multiple benefits: they provide shade, store CO2, capture fine dust, and absorb rainwater like a sponge – thus helping to relieve the sewer network. The acquired knowledge was collected in a digital brochure shared among the partner municipalities.
