The project
On the occasion of the upcoming 50th anniversary of the 1976 Friuli earthquake, this project is dedicated to a comprehensive analysis of natural hazards in the cross-border region. In addition to seismic activity, the focus lies on hydrogeological risks such as landslides, floods, and sinkholes, which are increasing in the Carnic Alps and around Gemona – exacerbated by climate change. The rockfall at the Plöcken Pass in December 2023 highlighted the urgency of this issue.
Since regional, cross-border studies have been lacking to date, the Universities of Trieste and Udine are collaborating with experts to analyze the natural and anthropogenic causes of these phenomena. Building on this, strategies for risk mitigation and safe coexistence with natural hazards will be developed. A core objective is to achieve long-term public awareness. The scientific findings will be presented in an accessible format through an information volume, thematic exhibitions, school projects, and excursions for the general public, students, and visitors within the HEurOpen area.
