The European Commission has officially closed the Interreg V-A Italy-Austria Cooperation Programme for the 2014-2020 funding period. The successful implementation of the programme was confirmed with the signing and submission of the closing letter.

With a total budget of €98.4 million, of which €82.2 million came from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), numerous projects were implemented that have sustainably strengthened competitiveness and cohesion in the border region. These funds were channelled into projects in the fields of research and innovation, nature and culture, and institutional strengthening. A further focus was placed on local development (CLLD – “Community-Led Local Development”), which directly involved citizens in shaping activities and decisions. This not only advanced economic and social development but also deepened mutual understanding and friendship across borders.

This milestone highlights the strong partnership between Italy and Austria. The letter confirms that the financial resources provided were used fully and in a targeted manner, all submitted expenditures were audited, and the programme’s objectives were achieved. The success is the result of the tireless commitment of all project sponsors, partners, and the authorities involved. The successful collaboration continues in the current Interreg VI-A Italy-Austria 2021-2027 programme to jointly shape the border region in the future.
