Cross-Border Energy Initiatives in the EU
Guiding Local Actors and Policymakers Towards a Sustainable Future
The Handbook on Cross-Border Energy Communities (CBECs) has been released, offering a comprehensive guide on establishing and managing energy initiatives that cross national borders within the European Union. This pivotal resource aims to empower local actors, policymakers, and stakeholders, enabling them to navigate the unique legal, technical, and administrative challenges posed by CBECs. The goal is to underscore their significant contributions to the EU’s energy transition and cohesion objectives.
CBECs provide numerous benefits, including economic efficiency, job creation, enhanced energy independence, and reduced carbon footprints. However, the implementation of these communities is not without its challenges Beyond theoretical guidance, the Handbook provides practical advice and real-world examples, such as “Calorie Kehl-Strasbourg” and “Zusamme Solar! Colmar.” These projects showcase successful governance, innovative financing, and collaborative technological approaches, serving as inspirational models for future cross-border initiatives.
At the launch event, Jean-Pierre Halkin, Head of Unit – Interreg, Cross-Border Cooperation, Internal Borders, emphasized the Handbook’s mission, stating:
“This Handbook ensures that citizens in border regions are empowered to produce and consume locally generated renewable energy, strengthening resilience and sustainability while reducing external dependencies.”
Beyond theoretical guidance, the Handbook delivers practical advice and real-world examples, aiming to transform border regions into key contributors to the EU’s energy transition.
