START2: Pilot Day

The START Living Lab project is organizing a “Pilot Day” on “Drones in Mountain Rescue” in Belluno. The project’s goal is the use of semi-autonomous drones for rescue operations in extreme environments, especially in the mountains.

The meeting brings together companies, research, and mountain rescue services. The event is aimed at mountain rescuers, researchers, company experts, and all interested parties. In 2025, the focus will be on newly developed technologies and automated processes for specific application areas. The program includes “Pilot Get Together” events, a night exercise, and a gorge exercise, which expose participants to realistic operational conditions.

More details on the program can be found in the attachment.

Results of the event

The Pilot Day Belluno 2025 brought together over 40 drone pilots and international partners for two intensive days of tests and expert discussions. Highlights of the event included a tethered drone from MAVTech for stable connectivity in extreme terrain and a VR simulator from the terraXcube lab for realistic training scenarios. An innovative risk analysis tool from the SIENA research network in Carinthia was also presented. The night exercise at the foot of the Marmolada impressively demonstrated the efficiency of technology in searching for missing persons. On the second day, participants discussed the safe integration of drones into the rescue chain. Additionally, an airship for communication purposes at the 2026 Olympic Games was presented. Sebastian Mayrgündter (NOI Techpark) summarizes: “Pilot Day 2025 showed that innovation arises from listening. This is the only way we can create intelligent solutions in Europe.”
