EU launches new initiative to support cross-border energy communities

The European Commission (DG REGIO), in collaboration with the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) and the Mission Opérationnelle Transfrontalière (MOT), is launching a new call for proposals. The aim is to support the development of Cross-border Energy Communities (CBEC) and to directly involve local actors in the energy transition.

At a time when local and sustainable energy generation is becoming increasingly important, this opens up new opportunities for cross-border cooperation. The new initiative for cross-border energy communities aims to unlock the potential of border regions as pioneers for decentralized and citizen-led energy solutions.

From July to November 2025, actors from European border regions are invited to submit their project ideas. The call is open to a wide range of organizations active in border regions. These include cross-border entities and Euroregions, local and regional authorities, citizen cooperatives and initiatives, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and associations, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and more.

Under the initiative, seven pilot projects will be selected, benefiting from a comprehensive support package:

  1. Tailored technical support: Experts from REScoop.eu, the European federation of citizen energy cooperatives, will offer targeted assistance through workshops, webinars, and individual consultations.
  2. Financial support: Each selected pilot project will receive seed funding of €15,000.

Further information will be published over the summer. To provide interested actors with all the necessary information and to answer questions, an online information session will be held on 10 July 2025. Take the opportunity to get in direct contact with the organizers and learn the details of the application process.
