Bat Protection in the Spotlight
On Monday, October 27, the general assembly of the Interreg Italy-Austria project CABLES took place.
The dramatic decline of many bat species in Europe is caused by a variety of factors: habitat destruction and fragmentation, the spread of diseases, environmental pollution from chemicals and light emissions are putting significant pressure on these nocturnal hunters. In addition, the increasingly evident effects of climate change—such as heatwaves, droughts, and rising winter temperatures—further threaten their survival.
In response to this critical situation, the Interreg Italy-Austria CABLES project was launched. Its goal is to develop and implement a cross-border monitoring system for bats that use underground habitats, aiming to precisely analyze climatic, ecological, and health-related risk factors. Furthermore, the project enables early detection of potential alarm situations and thus the initiation of effective protective measures.
